RESEARCH
There is a continuous need to understand how climate change policies are developed, how climate diplomacy is performed, and how sustainable development is implemented. To that end, the UNESCO Chair on Climate Diplomacy is undertaking rigorous research projects. Climate diplomacy is the underlying subject that transcends all the Chair's work. Among others, some of the research topics that the Chair covers are:
Climate diplomacy and policy: National, European and international perspectives.
Climate change and migration: The effects of climate change on migration are numerous yet under-studied. The goal is to highlight the trends of this relationship and the role of climate diplomacy in finding solutions for the problem per se or to the potential disputes between countries.
Climate change and sustainable development: Sustainable development is inextricably interconnected with tackling climate change. SDGs in their entirety are expected to contribute to and be benefited from the efforts made in combating climate change.
Climate change and transport, with a focus on shipping, maritme and port affairs: Transport, and especially shipping and shipping-related activities, are expected to play a significant role in the efforts to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions.
Climate change and ocean development: Blue economy and blue growth are expected to be in the forefront for the sustainable development of our seas and oceans. Climate diplomacy will have a growing role to play in agenda setting and policy making concerning ocean's sustainability.
Climate diplomacy in Western Balkans, Southeast Europe and the Mediterranean: The progress of climate policies in these regions is getting more and more important, as the Mediterranean is considered as a hotspot for climate change. In this context, climate diplomacy is crucial for the relation between the countries of the regions under examination. The role of civil socitety will also be explored.
Climate diplomacy, cultural heritage and (human) security: Protection of cultural heritage has gradually become connected to climate effects and securitization.
